Johnson is probably best known for his National Book Award-winning and Pulitzer Prize-finalist novel Tree of Smoke, but his highly acclaimed Jesus' Son continues to be influential to this day. I only saw the movie of Jesus' Son. It is the gospel story, where Jesus, God's Son, proves faithful when humanity could not. For whatever reason, despite others reading it and recommending it highly, I avoided it. My own position is that Jesus' biological father remains unknown but is unlikely Joseph, husband of Mary. The misfits and sinners that populate his stories are lost, sometimes physically, but most often emotionally. Now, we have Jesus encountering a woman who is a widow, and her son is sick. Right before this healing story is the tale of a centurion [a Roman soldier] asking Jesus to heal his own servant. I have had Johnson's story collection (connected story collection, that is) Jesus' Son (1992) on my shelf for a long time. JESUS' SON was recommended to me as the perfect tryout book for Johnson's literature.
